Image gallery

An Image Gallery is a way of displaying many photos all on one page.  It is one way to manage pages or sections where you have a lot of images and want to keep them tidy.  Some examples of where you might use an Image Gallery are:

  • where you have a set of photos you want to organise into albums.
  • where you want to tile a lot of photos to make a visual impact, for example to make a visual blog feed.
  • where you have material that is primarily visual but with a little bit of text, like a portfolio of work.
  • where you simply want to collect all the images on your site in one place.

All AlbanyWeb Image Galleries are fully responsive, which means that the images will rearrange themselves to fit the available screen space.  That means that your image galleries will always be easy to see no matter what device your visitor is using.

How Image Galleries are constructed

Because an Image Gallery is an extra feature, it is customised to your requirements, so each AlbanyWeb website is slightly different.  However, for a simple Image Gallery, we start from a special content type called 'Image'.  The Image consists of a title, the Upload field for the image, and, optionally, a description.  There may be other fields too, or on your site, this content type is called something different, such as 'Portfolio', or 'Biography'.

Sometimes, we collect images from other pages in the site to create your Image Gallery, and in this case, there is not a special content type, and everything just arranges itself automatically.  This would be the case if you wanted your blog feed to appear as Images rather than as a traditional article list.

Adding an image to an image gallery

To add an image to your image gallery:

  1. Make sure you are logged in (and not editing a page).
  2. On your Editing menu (either located at the side or just below your main menu), select 'Image' under 'Add new content'.
  3. Give this image a short name in the 'Title' field.
  4. You will see the title "Image".  This is the section of the form where you can upload your images.
  5. You will see a heading called "Add a new file".  Click on the 'Browse' button just below this.
  6. You will see a new window open on your screen which looks just like your Windows file navigation.   It should be showing the folders stored on your computer.
  7. Use this window to navigate to the folder containing the image you want to add to your gallery.
  8. Select the image and click on the 'Open' (or 'OK') button at the bottom of the window.
  9. You will now see a small text field with your image file listed inside.  Click on the 'Upload' button next to it.
  10. Once the image has uploaded, you will see a thumbnail version of your image.
  11. You may add other images by repeating steps 4-9 until you have added all the images that you want (most of the time you will only want to add one at a time).
  12. Add a description or any other fields that form part of your Image Gallery.
  13. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click 'Save'.

One you have added images to your image gallery, the visual arrangement of images is all handled by the website software, so you do not have to do anything else!

Editing an existing image

To edit an existing image:

  1. Make sure you are logged in
  2. Click on 'View all content' in your Editing menu.  You will see a list of all your content on your website.
  3. Select 'Image' from the drop down list by 'Type', and click on the 'Filter' button.
  4. You will see all your special Image content types.
  5. Click on the Edit link by the Image you wish to edit.
  6. Click 'Save' to save your edits.

Replacing an existing image

The best way to replace an image in a gallery is to add a new one, and then unpublish the one you no longer want (see Deleteing an Image below).  However, sometimes you may want to replace an existing image with a better version or a new image to go with the same description, in which case you can do the following:

  1. Follow steps 1-5 for Editing an existing image above.
  2. Next to your image (or images) is a button which says 'Remove'.
  3. Click this button - note that this will permanently remove this image.
  4. Follow steps 5-10 in 'Adding an image to an image gallery' above.
  5. Click 'Save'.

Deleting an image

We think that deleting is very dangerous because you can't change your mind.  So we don't allow you to do it.  However, to remove an Image from a gallery, do the following:

  1. Make sure you are logged in
  2. Click on 'View all content' in your Editing menu.  You will see a list of all your content on your website.
  3. Select 'Image' from the drop down list by 'Type', and click on the 'Filter' button.
  4. You will see all your special Image content types.
  5. Click on the Edit link by the image you wish to remove.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the form and click on the tab which says 'Publishing Options'.
  7. Untick the 'Published' box.
  8. Click 'Save'.

The image will now not appear in your image gallery, but can be resurrected at a later date if you wish.  If you are certain that you want to permanently delete an Image, please send us a support request.

Note:  if you click the 'Remove' button next to your uploaded image, the image will be permanently removed from your website, but the other information (title, description and so on) will still exist.

Considerations for adding images to an image gallery

  • Images that are the same size and orientation look better.  Because our galleries are all responsive, different sized images or a mix of portrait and landscape images can look untidy.  We have a range of tools we can apply to your gallery to help standardise images, but it is always good to upload an image as close as possible to the right size and orientation, to avoid strange cropping effects or stretching.   Some of our customers prefer to retain more control and edit the images themselves before uploading them.  We are also very happy to help you with your images or advise of how to use image editing software, so feel free to send us a support request.
  • Simple subjects with uncrowded backgrounds tend to look better.  Focus your image on a face or single element to get the most dramatic visual effect.  A very busy image can just get lost.
